Story 1: The Last Man on Earth

The last man on earth sat in his house. His dog sat at his feet. The man let his dog out as the sun set, just like he did every evening. He watched his dog run out across the field and into the woods. After an hour, the man called for his dog. The dog ran out of the woods and across the field. As the dog approached, the man noticed something in the dog's mouth. It was a piece of paper. The man grabbed the paper and read it. The paper asked "Why are you so lonely?". Shuttering, the man looked into the woods and hurried into the house. He locked the door and all the windows. He slept with his gun at his side.

The man kept his dog by his side for months. Finally, he decided to let his dog out at sunset once more. He watched his dog run out through the field and into the woods. An hour later, the dog returned. As the man watched the dog run across the field, he noticed something in the dog's mouth. He tore another piece of paper from the dog's mouth, and read aloud: "Why don't you come out and play with us?". The man yelled. He grabbed his dog and ran into the house. He locked the door and all the windows. He sat with his gun at his side.

The man grew brave the next day. He decided he would go with his dog into the woods. As the sun fell, the man let his dog out. The man followed his dog across the field and into the woods. The dog ran and the man ran. They ran to a clearing. In the clearing was a large old tree. A stairway spiraled up the tree, to a small wooden fort. A light flickered from inside. The dog ran up the stairs and into the fort. The man followed. The man reached the top of the stairs. He looked into the fort.

In the middle of the room there was a small fire. The walls were covered with drawings and writing. Two boys sat next to the fire.

The man asked the boys what they wanted from him.

The boys told the man to follow them. The man accepted the offer. The boys ran out of the fort, down the stairs, and into the woods. The man and the dog followed. They ran and ran. They ran to the edge of a cliff. The boys and the man and the dog looked out across a vast city. Thousands of people inhabited thousands of houses across the city. The boys pointed to their house, just below the cliff, at the edge of the city.

The man sighed. He was not the last man on earth.
